Our kōrero

Our group was born from the passion and dedication of local landowners

We recognised the transformative power of catchment groups in other parts of New Zealand. Witnessing the positive impact these groups had on their communities and environments, especially during times of adversity like the recent harsh weather events, inspired us to come together with a shared vision for our land and people of the land, our tangata whenua.

Our vision is simple

With a healthy community, comes a healthy environment

We're not just a catchment group; we're a community-driven force. We started by bringing together local leaders, farmers, environmentalists, and tangata whenua, all of whom shared a vision for a healthier, more resilient landscape.

The journey getting here

A chat over a beer

Understanding the power of catchment groups, a group of local farmers began meeting regularly to discuss our goals and formulate ideas.

Finding funding

The government, through the Ministry for Primary Industries, has offered funding to catchment groups since 2020. In 2023 we applied for this funding and were successfully granted approval, which means we have funding for the next 3 ½ years to help achieve our goals.

Establishing our committee

In 2023, we made it official by setting up our committee. This group of 19 passionate people, each with their own skills and dedication, has been key in guiding our catchment group, making sure our goals match what our community and environment need.

growing our team

In 2024, our sub-committee groups were established and three part time staff were employed. Our seven sub-committees represent a pillar of our strategy, Community Involvement, Water Quality, Biodiversity, Community wellbeing, Climate change, Iwi Involvement and Agency Interaction.

Our Official launch

On Saturday, August 17th, we're excited to officially launch our catchment group. This event is all about celebrating the hard work we've done together and kicking off our journey toward sustainable land, people and water management. We’d love for everyone in the community to join us as we share our plans and look forward to building a stronger, resilient environment for future generations.
